The evening hours waned ahead of him, as Timberwolf shambled around the clearing. He was looking for the perfect spot for a late afternoon nap, but so far, nowhere in the clearing was quite comfortable enough. With his thick fur, the den was stifling with the sun’s last rays shinning down on it. More so than the old tomcat enjoyed.
He wanted a place that was warm, but not too warm. Cool, but not chilly. He wanted a place that was comfortable but… no place that he had tried had yet matched the criteria, much to his chagrin.
Timberwolf settled, instead, for being seated on a patch of wild flowers. They were comfortable enough for sitting but not for napping. The blossoms peeked out on each side of him, his still thick, long fur nearly covering them, aside from a few stems that protruded out a mouse tail or two from beneath his hind legs. The old tom sat with his head lowered slightly, shoulders unintentionally hunched. He still held himself with a level of pride, but, as much as his body would allow him to. He could not sit with shoulders square, head up, and his chest puffed out as he once did in his younger days.
It had started with the graying of his muzzle, the weakening of his limbs, and the dulling of his teeth and claws. With his face mostly gray now, and his body smaller than it once was, Timberwolf showed his age now. But, his eyes, which had dulled with the beginnings of a cloud, still shone with the pride that he once showed so well.
Movement barely caught his eye, making his head turn slightly. His gaze landed upon a familiar face, a clanmate. A friendly twitch of his whiskers greeted the other.

The things that managed to get under her skin were far and few between. Morningstar was well known for her cunning mind and self pride. She held herself to a very high standard and managed to keep up with it as well - making most cats comments or concerns roll off her without a second thought. She was vain, but rightfully so. She had not made it as far as she did by just being a pretty face. She had the wits and skills to match.
The slender she-cat had been doing rounds. She may not care for each of the cats on a personal level, but they were her responsibility and she swore to keep them all safe. So while it may not be her idea of a good time, exchanging pleasantries with her clanmates - she would do so if it meant she could better protect them and find additional ways to support their individual needs.
Her delicate white socks his the earth as she rounded to a quitter corner in the clearing. The clan was going good, but there was one cat she had not seen in a hot minute. As she neared the flower patch she noticed the aging tabby she had been wondering about. Of all the cats in the clan - his opinion was one of the few she would hear out. He was seasoned and seen his fair share of fights and bickering's. Not to mention he was the child of Orchidstar himself. Her honey coloured eyes were careful as she approached, dipping her own head in greeting,
"Afternoon Timberwolf. I haven't had a chance to check in and see how you've been as of late." she chirped, the sweetness filling her voice naturally.

Timberwolf had always held himself to a certain standard — it had been expected of him, after all, being a former leader’s only child. Most had expected far more out of the old tom, but he felt accomplished in his life. He had seen so much, done so much that, in truth, Timberwolf felt it was a life well lived. He had earned his position as a clan elder, one of the few that had made it so far as ‘retirement.’
While some might say he’d been metaphorically put out to pasture… Timberwolf knew that that wasn’t the case — not exactly, anyway.
As his gaze came to settle on one of the cats that had succeeded his father, the old tom’s ears and whiskers twitched just a little. It was always a pleasure to speak with Morningstar, although they didn’t speak as often as he and other clanmates did. But she was busy, and he could not fault her for not holding many close friendships. The she-cat dipped her head in greeting. Timberwolf returned the gesture before a pleased look crossed his graying features.
“Afternoon Timberwolf. I haven’t had a chance to check in and see how you’ve been as of late,” Morningstar said. A small rumble of a purr touched his voice for a moment before Timberwolf spoke in his own deep baritone.
“It’s quite alright, Morningstar,” the old tom stated. “I know things are quite busy for you. I don’t expect you to have much time for idle chit-chats. How have you been? Not working too terribly hard for too long, I hope.” And it was true; he had seen the toll that had been taken on his father with the weight of leadership. He doubted it was much different from the young leader herself. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, after all.

Morningstar was far from the type to admire or respect another cat, there was only perfection and none came close to this impossible goal - herself included. However, the aged tom that rested before her came close. Even as age slowly started to grasp at him, you could see how much he had been through. Though a kindness remained in his eyes, there would always be the countless battles fought that haunted them. The idea got her tail to twitch in curiosity. If she did not have a façade to maintain she could rake his brain for endless hours, but there would always be a later time.
A kit would eventually wander over to hear the tales of his wars and his own fathers great deeds. She could just happen upon the scene and observe then. She couldn't show signs of weakness by giving into any childish whims.
"I always have time to chit-chat with my dear clanmates, yourself especially Timberwolf." she sat her rump down in a swift motion, curling her tail over her paws as she directed her attention towards the elder. "I have been busy, but I will do my part to pull my weight in the clan, no one gets an easy ride. We need all paws helping, and I refuse to sit idly by and watch others work, not when I am capable of assisting." She mewed softly, he pride swelling in her chest.

Timberwolf, at this point in his life, had accepted that nothing in life was perfect. ‘Perfection’ was something that was not achievable. The best that a cat could do, Timberwolf thought, was to do the best that they could do. To be their own definition of ‘good’ and fighting the ‘good fight,’ so to say. But, perhaps that was merely the meanderings of a tomcat a little past his prime.
"I always have time to chit-chat with my dear clanmates, yourself especially Timberwolf." Morningstar said. Timberwolf chuckled a little, a borderline wheeze of a sound.
“Well, I’m always happy for a chit-chat,” he said. In truth, he loved any interaction that he could get. He was somewhat sociable by nature, and not being out and about on patrols and hunting groups every day lessened the amount that he could communicate with others. He felt left behind at times, but he knew that he had earned his position within the Elder’s den.
"I have been busy, but I will do my part to pull my weight in the clan, no one gets an easy ride. We need all paws helping, and I refuse to sit idly by and watch others work, not when I am capable of assisting." Timberwolf could see the pride touching the younger cat. ‘To be young and so full of pride,’ he thought to himself. He had been much the same. Perhaps he still was at times… rather, he knew he was.
“That is very true,” he said. “But, pulling your weight looks different as a leader. Your duties are a tad different than the average warrior’s are. I’m not saying don’t help out, Morningstar. All I’m saying is don’t run yourself into the ground. It’s hard to recover from that, when things don’t stop coming.” He did his best to offer advice when he could, especially when he could see that others could probably use it — even if they didn’t always want it.

While Timberwolf was far more realistic, Morningstar was far from it. She was full of a confidence most could only strive to have. She was well aware of her skills as well as those of her clanmates and she made sure to put them all to use and make the best of it all. There was no peace and rest, everyone had to be ready at all times and she was going to be the one that made sure of it. Not only that, but the one to make sure that Orchidclan always comes out on top.
She was ready to respond to him comment on chit-chat when he pressed on, his wisdom and knowledge leaking through. She fought every urge to sneer at the toms comment about running herself into the ground, her pride wanting to flare like a flame, but she remained composed. The only thing that showed was the slightest flick of her tail,
"Rest assured Timberwolf, I am aware of my limits. Afterall I have Haildrift to help me carry some of the load. After all, it is best to lead by example. If I don't give it my all - how can I expect my clanmates to do the same?" she mused, humoring the conversation. She wasn't about to let on that she had high expectations of her clan and she was going to see to it herself they were met. "It's clear to me you speak from experience."

Timberwolf noted the flick of Morningstar’s tail, figuring he’d perhaps struck a nerve for the younger cat. Which, wasn’t entirely hard to do with the younger generations. Timberwolf had been much the same, thinking himself able to keep pushing through everything without a break. It had caught up to him eventually, but it wasn’t impossible to pull one’s self back from that point. It certainly wasn’t easy though, but Timberwolf was sure that the young leader understood that on some level — whether she respected it or not was a whole different story, however.
“Rest assured Timberwolf, I am aware of my limits. Afterall I have Haildrift to help me carry some of the load. After all, it is best to lead by example. If I don't give it my all - how can I expect my clanmates to do the same?" Morningstar inquired. Timberwolf chuckled a little, a raspy sound.
“Well, just make sure you take care of yourself,” Timberwolf said, meowing the words as if they were a tough piece of food. He gave a twitch of his ear. “Both of you, really.” He added after a moment’s pause. In truth, both of their leaders needed to take care of themselves, but trying to push the idea on the younger cats was admittedly a moot point, as Timberwolf had so noticed with the concealed ire he’d faintly detected within that tail twitch.

Her pride would be the death of her one of these days, but today was not one of those days. She had been raised well and taught to respect her elders. While his words were not something that she wanted to hear, it was probably something that she needed to hear. Which made it all the more bitter. She was too proud to admit these kinds of things, even when deep down she knew his words were right. Didn't mean he had to say it and make it a reality though.
"I don't think we would get too far if we didn't find time for ourselves to rest. So rest assured, Timberwolf - we are in good health. We have Seedbloom to think for that after all." she chuckled softly, trying to soften the air a bit, mostly from her own personal tension. These days have been long and tiring, but in a different way then before. The days were long and hot, but they were no longer worried about where their next meal was coming from.
"You must tire yourself out worrying about us so much, shouldn't you just enjoy the rest you have worked so hard for?"

Timberwolf had always been someone that said things that others needed to hear, without much regard for whether they wanted to hear them or not. Sometimes the hardest things in life were often things that one did not want to hear. However, Timberwolf could sense that he had struck a bit of a nerve with the leader, which… perhaps wasn’t the best of things to do.
“I don’t think we would get too far if we didn’t find time for ourselves to rest. So rest assured, Timberwolf — we are in good health. We have Seedbloom to think for that after all,” Morningstar said with a quiet chuckle. “You must tire yourself out worrying about us so much, shouldn’t you just enjoy the rest you have worked so hard for?”
“Well, alright. I’ll drop the subject then,” Timberwolf said with a quiet raspy chuckle punctuating his words. “As for earning rest, sure, but that doesn’t always mean I want it, myself. The Elder’s den can be a lonely place sometimes, especially when our minds don’t feel as old as we are.”
In truth, most days, Timberwolf did not feel as if his mind were the age that his body was, he still thought himself spry, and young, but then the ache in his bones would tell him otherwise. It was frustrating at times, but something he had long since come to terms with.

The she-cat was thankful that the elder was willing to drop the topic of rest. She would rather lose a life then sit back and do nothing. If she didn't lead by example what kind of leader would she be? She would stay paws on until it was no longer physically possible. Maybe this would be her own downfall, who knew for certain. But that would be her problem if, or whenever that day my arise.
"You don't want to rest?" She gasped, a joking expression reached her maw as she blinked at the older tom. "Oh how could that be?" she chuckled and shook her head, lightly teasing Timberwolf. He had given her such a hard time about resting and taking it easy and yet he was so quick to turn down rest himself. She did not fault him for it, but it was a comical touch if she did say so herself.
"If it is not rest you desire, Timberwolf - tell me what it is you want to do. There is no reason you can't still enjoy yourself safter all." Morningstar mused, her tail flicking towards him with her inquiry. If he wished to go for a walk or give his paw at hunting once more - she wouldn't stop him. Maybe accompany him to be on the safe side, but why force him into a den where he was unhappy. She knew she for one would not be fond of that idea.

Timberwolf had to accept that he could not ‘save’ the she-cat from herself and that she would do just as she pleased despite his advice. A small twitch of his whiskers, a small smile at the thought. ‘Ah, to be young. I cannot say that I was not the very same,’ he thought to himself. He’d, in his younger moons, felt that he had a lot to live up to, big pawprints to fill in being Orchidstar’s — only — son.
“You don’t want to rest?” Morningstar gasped, a jokester’s expression touching her features as she looked at Timberwolf. He gave a quiet chuckle, a sound that slowly grew to be more of a wheeze the older he got. A twinkle, however, touched his eyes with a youthful glimmer that could not be dulled, no matter how age touched his own features. “Oh how could that be?”
“Hey, when you get to be my age, sometimes you get too much rest,” he borderline purred.
“If it is not rest you desire, Timberwolf — tell me what it is you want to do. There is no reason you can’t still enjoy yourself after all,” Morningstar said. Timberwolf grew thoughtful for a moment.
“Honestly, I always enjoy a walk around the territory,” Timberwolf said in earnest. “Perhaps I could try these old bones at catching something once again. See if my claws are still sharp enough.” He couldn’t help but chuckle a little at his own statement.
Timberwolf knew he was free to come and go as he pleased within the camp — but it was hard to not feel confined when many insisted that he have someone with him at his age. Usually, in those moments he simply dropped the subject, not wishing to make them feel bad for their genuine concern for his safety. But, he also felt like telling them that it was only his bones that grew old — his mind still remembered everything he had learned and done in his younger days with sometimes startling clarity.

There was a youthful light that seemed to return to the old tabbies eyes that brough the smallest, genuine, smiles to the she-cats maw. So many cats tended to be left forgotten once they reached the elders den and that was always a fear of hers. She would rather go out in a blaze of glory instead of lying around waiting for the ticking hands of time to eventually capture her soul.
So to see this light in the old tom brought her a small moment of joy - not that she would ever admit to such a thing. After all this tom was wiser then her and would know his way around the territory better then herself. Who knows, maybe even in his olden moons he would still manage to teach her a thing or two.
"We'll I am sure Seedbloom wouldn't be upset at hearing you getting out to stretch and get some fresh air. Besides I approved it, so worst case she can chew my ears off for it." she chuckled and motioned for the entrance, "Would you do me the pleasure and lead the way, Timberwolf?"

Timberlwolf, well, a younger Timberwolf that is, would have once agreed with the sentiment of going out in a blaze of glory being better than being put out to pasture, so to say. But now… he realized that ther was some small use in being an elder. Some came to him for advice, and he could help around camp when his old bones weren’t quite so sore. He felt he still had use to some degree, although it wasn’t nearly as fulfilling as his purpose had been when he was a warrior. But, Timberwolf knew most of those things he could no longer do, the strain on his aged joints too much.
We'll I am sure Seedbloom wouldn't be upset at hearing you getting out to stretch and get some fresh air. Besides I approved it, so worst case she can chew my ears off for it." The leader said. Timberwolf let out a small sound of amusement, a happy twitch touching his whiskers.
Would you do me the pleasure and lead the way, Timberwolf?" Timberwolf stood, with some pride to his moments. He dipped his head slightly before beginning to walk towards the camp enterance. He walked with his chest puffed out a little, and his head and tail held high. He was having a moment of feeling good, feeling as if he were swirling with some pride.

The tom was suddenly on reserve when it came to words, but the young leader was by no means complaining. It was clear he was set in this adventure and had already set his whole heart into it. IT gave her the slightest sense of pride to watch the life return to the Elder. You really didn't notice how much older a cat could seem once they became stationary in the clan. It really was proof that age is how you feel inside.
Her white paws moved easily as she followed his lead pushing from the camp. It seemed so natural how he took his stance as they breached the wilderness of Orchidclan territory. "So, Timberwolf - were are we heading to first?" Morningstar inquired with a gleam of amusement.

Timberwolf led the way out of camp, shouldering his way out along the same path that he had taken a thousand times or more as a warrior. It felt strange now, but still familiar all at the same time. One of his ears twitched backward to listen as Morningstar spoke to him.
“So, Timberwolf — were are we heading to first?”
“The stream — I haven’t seen it in ages, and I always used to love the sound of the moving water,” Timberwolf responded with a resolute tone. His paws knew the way, a path he’d taken time and time again. It was the best place to get water, the best place to gather moss, and the easiest place to hunt. Of course, most of those didn’t matter much now — but perhaps he had some ideas for his old bones.
