MAGGOTCHEER
Who's in the shadows? Who's ready to play?
Squish. Squelch. Squish. Squelch. Squish.
Maggotcheer grimaced as fresh mud suckled her feet, painting her snow-white ankle fur a sickly brown. Although she'd only walked for maybe ten minutes, the former rogue's sensitive, pink skin -- poorly insulated thanks to premature balding -- already itched as badly as an ant bite. A well-composed cat most days, Maggotcheer had to fight the urge to chew on her irritated flesh until the itchy sensation waned. After all, potential employees -- er, her clanmates -- were watching. She couldn't look weak-willed.
The gaunt she-cat shot a pained look at the two youngsters bringing up the rear of the dawn patrol. Beefur and Honeyhoot, cousins of the sniveling GaleClan deputy Wapatofur, were among the greenest warriors in the clan, so she was initially surprised when Heronfrost assigned both of them to the same patrol -- and under her care, no less. Maggotcheer was no spring chicken, but she was certainly still new to ShoreClan, having left her 'uncivilized' life of full-time banditry behind just over two seasons ago. Now, she was just part-time. But, as always, her temporary bemusement quickly turned to intrigue. Who cared about the why? Heronfrost had given her a grand opportunity to expand her illegal trade business, even if the fish-eating dummy was none the wiser. Sure, she would make sure patrolling got done, but she also planned to sus out whether Beefur and Honeyhoot might make for decent henchmen -- er, collaborators.
They were certainly young and naive enough to be molded and trained, but what about competent? Maggotcheer studied Beefur with narrowed eyes. From the little she had observed of the tom, he had an attention span no better than a gnat, and he gabbed way too much. What if he let precious trade secrets slip? Although he was amiable and eager to please, two traits she could easily exploit, Beefur might be too big of a liability in a business that required focus and precision. However, his sister, with her exceptional eavesdropping skills and quiet demeanor, showed potential.
Maggotcheer slowed to a halt a couple of tail-lengths from the border with OrchidClan, beckoning the young felines to her side with a flick of her patchy, thinning tail.
"Would you two care to do the honors of marking the border?" She watched them with cold, unblinking eyes.

beefur (he/him) | shoreclan Beefur was already quite the distracted young cat, so the fact that the patrol wouldn't be going near the GaleClan border was probably for the better. As much as it hurt him that they were headed towards OrchidClan instead, he knew deep down that if they'd gone along GaleClan's border, he would have spent too much time searching for the pretty calico cat he'd met. He would probably be made undone by wiser cats like Maggotcheer and Honeyhoot, seeing him act even odder than usual. But how he desperately wanted to see her again... no, he needed to push her out of his mind for now.
The mud didn't bother the young tom half as much as it seemed to bother the patrol leader. His own white paws were turning brown, though he hardly noticed with his racing mind. And even besides his busy brain cells bouncing back and forth in his head, to him it just felt natural for his paws to be wet and dirty. He was ShoreClan born and bred, right? Much as he loved to run at top speeds through the territory, he also enjoyed the feeling of water through his fur. He couldn't imagine a cat willingly joining ShoreClan if they had been happier never seeing water or mud, so it never clocked in his mind that perhaps Maggotcheer wasn't enjoying the feeling on her skin.
The ginger and white tom had never really known much about the lanky former outsider. But she certainly struck him as someone not too dissimilar to some of his family members, acting rather cool and collected all the time and like they had a secret that only the cool kids were in on, right? He tried looking to his littermate for a better gauge of how they were supposed to feel about Maggotcheer, debating on how to approach all of this.
At the very least, Beefur had managed to at least keep his trap shut on the patrol thus far, waiting until someone else spoke first. If there was one thing that had been sort of ingrained in him from his family, it was not to speak unless spoken to. Perhaps it seemed the rule only applied to him, since everyone else was allowed to talk whenever they wanted to, but he was given the side-eye whenever he tried to bring up a new conversation topic.
StarClan, how desperately he wanted to fit in... maybe Maggotcheer would give him a little praise if he showed his ability to at least get a job done right? Did he even want her praise? He had no clue anymore. Ugh, other cats were so confusing.
When they arrived at the border and Maggotcheer gave instructions, Beefur looked between her and Honeyhoot. "Uh, yeah, sure," he said rather innocently, trying to gauge why she seemed to simply sit back and watch. Was that what patrol leaders did? He hadn't had the opportunity to lead a patrol yet, so it was hard to say. Maybe Maggotcheer was watching the two of them in order to report back to Heronfrost how they were doing as warriors now that they were no longer apprentices? To show that they really didn't need strict supervision anymore? Beefur sure couldn't tell what was going on in anyone else's mind at any point, so he simply did as was told, making his way up towards a bush and giving it a quick urine mark, shaking off his fur as his finished out of habit.
