The sky was in that deep violet stage of pre-dawn. Not quite night anymore but not quite morning. There were still stars on the farthest edge of the visible horizon, not yet chased away by the sun. Despite the early start, Ripplefoot already sat in the middle of the camp.
Yellow eyes stared up. Not in the direction of the dawn, but in the opposite. One by one the warriors of StarClan winked out, gone to sleep until the next night. Silently, Ripplefoot bid them a good rest and thanked them for watching over her Clan.
One day that would be her. One day that would be all of them. Time stopped for no cat. Kits became apprentices who became warriors. Sometimes those warriors became queens, birthing their own kits and the next generation. Sometimes those warriors became deputies, sometimes leaders. The lucky ones survive seasons upon seasons to retire to the elders den, and the unlucky ones lost their lives to battles and sickness.
Ripplefoot would never say it but she hoped to die in battle. She couldn’t stand the thought of wasting away in the elders den, complaining about the aches and pains and letting the apprentices bring her prey and change her bedding. She wanted to die with honor and dignity, not in her nest when she couldn’t find the energy to move.
Abruptly the senior warrior shook herself, dismissing her somber thoughts. She turned her paws back toward the warriors den and entered silently. Rather than returning to her nest though, she gently nudged her two Clanmates, Lavenderwhisker and Maskedbandit, with her muzzle. ”Dawn patrol.” she whispered.
Without waiting to see if they were awake, she returned to her previous spot in the middle of the camp.
