Ducknose’s breathing was finally becoming normal again. Exhaustion was pressing her hard against the moss nest inside the Medicine den, but she lifted her head anyway. They were so warm, small, and so close to death. As all newborn kits were defenseless to any threat.

She groomed them a little rough but she had never felt more tender in her life. Ducknose imagined that even if her cowardly brother, Wapatofur, were to come home and see her, she wouldn't so much as give him a hiss. The calico wasn't sure if she liked that.

Ducknose stopped grooming to look down at her kits. Three had been born, as she had been. Two large kits and one seemingly skinnier and tiny. Their pelts were all different: a calico she-cat like herself, a cream tom, and a ginger tom. A part of her worried about the ginger kit for a moment, but all would be well. She knew that he was just smaller because he had taken on his father’s physique. Mellowpaw had left for a few moments, reassuring her he would come back soon. That was fine with her. Ducknose had carried these kits, given birth to them, and now she had to figure out what she was going to do.

As the moons slowly came to pass, the queen had seen her fair share of kits and nautical adventures.Mind yout this seemed to be Ducknose’s first time on this particular adventure and she had been sure to round of the kits and get them busy while Mallowpaw came and did his work. The sandy coloured she-cat was not unfamiliar with the whole ordeal as she had recently gone through all of this herself. Once she was sure the kits were busy and out of the way she decided to go and check on the newest Mother and additions of the clan.

Peeking in to the cavern with the calico, Desertrose gave a small smile - a sign of affection, one of the rare moments in her own life. Kits always managed to brighten her day when she got a chance to see them. Watching the rough grooming she gave a chuckle, Ducknose would come to find her own footing as a mother in time, she was in no position to challenge any of her methods, if she wanted advice she would ask. Until then all of her thoughts would remain just that.

She looked to meet Desertrose’s green eyes. She had only done this twice, asking for advice or information directly: as a kit and a soon-to-be warrior. From those two times, Ducknose quickly learned that pridefully avoiding “ruining their reputation” by seeking easily attained wisdom was a common stupidity, something she refused to stoop to. Sometimes, questions were needed to improve and to avoid mistakes, and Desertrose might know what Ducknose needed. After all, the other queen was an experienced mother who would be raising her kits alone, too. “I'm alright,” she tried to purr snidely, but it didn’t seem to carry in her exhausted voice, so she gave it up, “I've grown these kits inside me for moons, but now that I have delivered, I am unsure of what to do. How does someone raise kits to benefit the Clan? I never once dreamed of or have known motherhood. I have many friends and cats I gather and share tongues with, but none could give me the wisdom I seek better than you. So that is why I wanted to ask for your help. Would you, please, help me?”

Ducknose didn’t feel meek for the question, but the idea of someone else hearing it made her cautious. She should always be a little wary of what those she needed to push for answers heard of her. However, as this was a sensitive moment for all she-cats, Desertrose was unlikely to tell.

To just any old clanmate it was not unheard of for Desertrose to be a little closed off and cold. Ever since the passing of her late mate, she had been much more reserved then she had once upon a time. It was a cold hard truth that she was still learning to deal with on a daily basis and some days were easier than others. Some days were so much harder and the one constant in her days that helped her was her lovely kittens. Here Ducknose was, a cat with a lot of pride and she was in a situation all of her own. Who was Desertrose to turn her back on a fellow queen - let alone a first time one.

A kind smile came to her maw as she made her way into the den and laid down near the other she-cat. “I won’t lie, it can be scary and overwhelming at first. No mother is perfect, that I promise you.'' She mused softly, keeping her voice soft so as not to disturbed the young kittens, or to even add stress to Ducknose either. “There is no right and wrong way. All you can do is shower them in love and push them towards the right path. Make sure you are there for them. The rest comes with trial and error.”
