Even before he'd been made deputy, Heronfrost had been among the first of the warriors to awaken. Becoming Minkstar's second in command had not changed that. If anything, it only made the habit more prominent.

When he woke up that morning, he was the first. He glanced around at the slumbering warriors around him before silently getting up from his nest and carefully approaching where Tigerdusk lay. He prodded the warrior lightly and waited a moment before whispering, "Time for dawn patrol."

Only after he was sure that Tigerdusk was awake did Heronfrost exit the warriors den to approach the apprentice den. He stuck his head into the entrance and was a lot less gentle about this awakening. "Fennecpaw! Up! Time for dawn patrol!"

Then he retreated and padded toward the camp entrance, grooming his face while he awaited his Clanmates.

Tigerdusk, exhausted, raised his head after waking up to Heronfrost. He exchanged pleasantries: dipping his head in respect or flicking his tail. After watching the silver tom leave for what was likely his apprentice or the freshkill pile, Tigerdusk heaved himself up from his nest. The world blurred for only a moment, but the tom’s whiskers twitched in annoyance. Stepping outside the Warrior Den the air was, as to be expected, frigid. Immediately it raised his spirits, feeling great against his sweaty pelt. However, the thought of it being so cold worried him due to the unusual amount of kits being born this season.

The winds were so much worse in Leaffall for a young kit, strengthening with a camp so close to the ocean shore. It made him wonder if the kits would be capable of adapting after being born this close to leafbare. He shook his head. It was unlike him to be so negative. The kits would be fine as long as the Queens were around.

The russet cat quickly made his way to the entrance of camp, not even glimpsing at the Freshkill pile. He hadn't had much of an appetite as of late. He made a nodding gesture at Heronfrost and waited for Fennecpaw. He glanced back to the nursery, where his mate was presumably awake and checking on all the new kits. Myrtlewing was an early riser; if only Tigerdusk could learn a thing or two.

The young she-cat had been in and out of sleep all night. There had been so much going on in her mind and she hated to admit she was distracted as the seasons began to change. With Jellyfishstar vanishing and the new shift in the clan. Minkstar was now standing tall, her own mentor was her right hand man and then there was her. She must have gotten into her own head but suddenly she wasn’t enough. Everything felt like a weight on her shoulders and she knew it was silly - but she wasn’t able to shake the impending feeling, try as she might.

The partial sleep that had her in its grip was very abruptly torn away from her as the familiar voice of Heronfrost sharply called her name from the entrance of the den. Her tail fluffed out as she jumped awake from the tom. Taking a moment to catch her breath as he retreated to wait outside in the clearing she felt her heart sink. She couldn’t let this start out wrong.

Rushing to her paws she gave herself a good shake, thankful for her short fur not looking like a wild untamed mess. Quickly scrambling from the den she trotted over to where Tigerdusk and Heronfrost waited for her, making sure to hustle and show she was ready. Even if she was still incredibly tired, she didn’t want to mess this up,

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting.”

Heronfrost was pleased he hadn't been left waiting for too long. Tigerdusk appeared from the warriors den almost as soon as he sat down, and they exchanged silent nods of greeting. Fennecpaw didn't take too much longer either, though she seemed to think otherwise. Heronfrost flicked a single ear at her dismissively. "You didn't." He mewed simply.

He stood up from his sitting position smoothly and left through the camp entrance without a word. He fully expected his two companions to be behind him when he called over his shoulder, ”We'll start by the Shores first to see if the tides have washed anything dangerous or of use overnight, then work our way around the borders. Once we reach the Shimmering Pond, we break for a rest and an attempt at hunting.”

Without slowing his stride, Heronfrost finally glanced behind him at his companions. He made sure to include Fennecpaw in his fleeting gaze, just so she'd know her opinion would matter, as he questioned, ”Any objections?”

“You didn’t” and the dismissive flick of his ear without so much as glancing at her caused the young she-cat’s heart to race. Was he mad at her for sleeping in? She hadn’t had to be up so early in a while and she honest to Starclan forgot. The tip of her tail started to twitch nervously as she nodded and followed the older tom out of the camp. Her eyes were wide and attentive as she listened on to each word he spoke, her large ear turned forward to make sure she did not forget anything.

The Shores and Shimmering Pond, and then some hunting. That seemed like a decent morning. After all Fennecpaw always enjoyed getting to walk along the Shores. There were so many chances for something new to pop up and take her by surprise. However as Heronfrost looked back at her she felt out of place. She didn’t have any right to object to any of it if she did have a problem with it - after all maybe he was just trying to make sure she was keeping up and not holding up the patrol.

Quick to nod her head in agreement to his suggested patrol plan, she hoped it was the correct response.

“Not at all, Heronfrost.” Tigerdusk let his green eyes shift to the young apprentice by his side, even smaller against a rather broad and fluffy tom like himself. She carried a mighty resemblance to Desertrose. Which was funny; she was expressive and sheepish, which clashed against his mental image of the burden of grief, yet the underlying battle of perseverance etched into her mother’s features. A clean, smooth stone that had yet to be shattered by experience and utter hopelessness, although the pain of losing her father may have chipped at her. As they walked, he could not help but ask, “Fennecpaw, how is it being an older sister? Desertrose gave birth to three, I believe? Two she-cats and a tom?” He hoped the conversation of her new family would lift her spirits. He recalled how thrilled Myrtlewing was when Driftfall was born during her apprenticeship. And anytime they crossed paths after Desertrose’s kitting, Myrtlewing would purr and fawn over how cute the new kittens were, so he reasoned Fennecpaw must be in love with them, too. The dark russet tom did not push Fennecpaw for an answer. It was a question mostly to keep her from stressing or upsetting herself, and he moved his gaze ahead.

At the agreement from both apprentice and warrior, Heronfrost started off in earnest. He didn't turn back to look at either of his companions, eyes fixed firmly on the horizon like he could see their destination already.

That didn't stop him from turning an ear backwards to hear Fennecpaw's answer. Heronfrost himself had only the one sibling, Minnowpool, so he wouldn't be able to relate to however she felt about her new baby siblings.

He did, however, know the feelings of abandonment and how those feelings could effect training. If Fennecpaw's focus wasn't on becoming a warrior, Heronfrost would do his best to help guide her as best he could.
