Rookbriar waded through a sea of colorful, brittle leaves, squashing some underfoot and scattering others to the side as he picked his way back to camp. Four deceased mice dangled by their tails from his mouth, their bodies swaying in rhythm with the wind-swept tree branches. Two of the squeakers were for his kits and two were for the queen who had recently moved into the nursery, her belly swollen with her own litter. Picking up the pace, Rookbriar breached the OrchidClan clan entrance and bounded toward the den where his new wards and their babysitter awaited breakfast.
"Good morning, Violetwing, kits," he chirped once he had deposited the freshkill in front of the den's five occupants, waving his tail in greeting. "Sorry for my tardiness. Crunchy leaves make hunting so much more difficult in Leaf Fall."
