(Firstly, I am so sorry. Both for how long my thing is and the wait I gave you. I wanted to try and share the drama soon to happen to you this way- to keep things vague and fun, but still have you informed. Also, just because it's sort of cool to do. So pretty much feel free to ignore and skip all the middle stuff.)
Mellowpaw glanced around the large cave. He could hear the echoing of each breath and feel the vibration of flowing water coming from somewhere. Even then, his ears were not as sharp as his nose was. Ever since he was a young kit, he was never outmatched in games involving finding something. His nose was sharper than his claws would ever be. He currently didn't think of it as a good thing.
He could smell Minknose better than he could see her. The smell of stress and fear mixed with her usual scent of something similar to mint and sap. Mellowpaw hadn't been born in ShoreClan, but he might as well have known of Minknose his whole life. From the time he was a kit, he never had seen Minknose concerned or nervous. It was like watching a tall mountain- that had once towered over everything- crumble before you. Worse yet, Frozenkingdom wouldn't be here. What was he supposed to do? His mentor had died early into his apprenticeship and it hadn't been long since he got ‘paw’ as a suffix. Mellowpaw hadn't even been to The Moon Springs more than a few times.
Minknose glanced back at him, clearly upset. If not from her low ears- then her scent that made Mellowpaw want to run in the opposite direction. He simply nodded his head to her in acknowledgment. There was nothing an apprentice could do for her. Even his sympathy of knowing the pain of losing a teacher…
It felt as though walking through the cave had taken lifetimes. The island was not so far away last Mellowpaw remembered, but he guessed dread would do that. Minknose laid down and drank of the moonlit pool with hardly a gesture to him. He reckoned she was as anxious as he was. Laying down, he tried to get comfortable. Mellowpaw, closing his eyes for a moment, quickly shook off his drowsiness. ‘I need to focus on something- am I also supposed to sleep? What if Minknose needs me?’ His eyes, flickering around, settled on the pool next to him. He looked at the gentle water- until it burst red.
Mellowpaw jumped back, gasping in horror. He looked around him, but it was far too dark to see exactly where he was. Certainly not at The Moon Springs. Mellowpaw couldn't even smell Minknose nearby- nor the warrior who stood at the entrance. He looked up. The moon was almost completely covered by dark, angry clouds. He shivered.
Suddenly, millions of scents- belonging to cats- assaulted his nose. Angry yowling rang out from the crowd, yet he couldn't distinctly understand them. On a very familiar low-hanging tree branch, three cats seem to be discussing something important. Mellowpaw’s vision blurred as he tried to see them up close. Yellow, dark gray, and black mixed with white were all he could pick up before the world returned to a black void.
Again the world changed back to color, but it was always dull and dark. Then yowling once more, followed by cries of pain and anguish. Cats were all around him- fighting. None of them seemed to see Mellowpaw, thankfully. Every cat was zipping by him so fast he couldn't identify them. Each cat donned some kind of red stuff on their pelts. Mellowpaw quickly realized what it wa—
He recognized two figures. A white tom who he would know no matter how far.. and then a large, long-furred brown tom. ‘I swear I've seen him somewhere..’
The world changed. There was a particularly familiar white cat, very far off into the trees. This one wasn't Frozenkingdom. ‘I know this cat for sure, but from where?’ Mellowpaw strained his eyes to see them better, but they were covered by the disguise of branches and the strange, dark fog in each location Mellowpaw went to. However, he thought he saw something ginger following the white cat. He turned around and nearly jumped out of his fur when sitting silently behind him was a cat in clear focus.
The golden-brown tabby she-cat, who stood at the ready, posture perfect, and matching golden eyes typically narrowed in either dissatisfaction or indifference. At least, that's what he remembered of Morningstar. But she was different. Her eyes were empty; she wasn't there. It was like she were a rock shaped exactly in her image. Mellowpaw bristled for a reason unknown to him.
“There is only hardship when one is indecisive.” Mellowpaw turned, and immediately the stench of herbs hit his nose. A small, golden tabby tom who stood no more than a few fox-lengths away looked bitter. Mellowpaw noticed that he smelled of nervousness as well. The golden cat growled, “Do you still not understand? Let me put it clearly for you- like how it can not be day and night at once, you can't decide not to have either. Because lives depend on both.”
All went white. Then it was dark again. He lifted his head, exhausted. ‘Please, not again.’ His eyes landed on a waking Minknose- or now it was Minkstar, wasn't it?
“It is done,” was all she said.
Mellowpaw tried to secretly check the room. He was back at The Moon Springs for sure!
All remained was one question-
‘Do I tell her what I saw?’
