Barely a moon had passed since Wapatostar’s life – already hanging on by a thread – imploded. His leader? Dead. His sister? Defected and irreparably pissed at him, no doubt. The love of his life? Missing and potentially dead if Maggotcheer had gotten to Cora like he feared.
Before the events of the past moon, Wapatostar had always managed to plod along and fulfill his duties no matter what the world threw at him. He dealt with hardship in his quiet, solemn way, asking nothing of those around him but space and solitude. But the death of Basilstar – who was as much his older brother as his boss – and the subsequent disappearances of the two most precious she-cats in his life had added far too much weight to his shoulders. He hit the ground hard – metaphorically speaking, but also he wasn’t exactly sure footed these days either – and had yet to pull himself to his paws.
Wapatostar could barely eat or sleep these days, let alone hunt or give orders. Apparently that was unbecoming for a leader. Sparrowclaw and Frozengale certainly thought so; they’d been hounding him for the past few days to do this and that for the clan. But what had they expected? The gentle giant was no leader. Basilstar, may StarClan light his path, had chosen foolishly. GaleClan would be better off without Wapatostar’s leadership. If only his medicine cat and deputy would just accept that. He shouldn’t have let them pressure him into getting his nine lives. Now he had eight more lives to lose before he could abdicate the proverbial throne. Why Sparrowclaw didn’t just take over, Wapatostar didn’t understand.
The fluffy brown-and-white tom trudged toward the elder’s den, tail dragging pathetically across the ground. Fed up with the new leader’s endless woe, Frozengale had ordered Wapatostar to just do something helpful, even if it was just feeding Aesop the elder. Wapatostar, happy to be far from Frozengale’s ever increasing temper and piercing words, obliged immediately. Except he’d chosen to bring the elder a pretty sunflower instead, as even the smell of freshkill made the deputy nauseous. Sparrowclaw would make sure Aesop ate. Sparrowclaw was good at his job.
Wapatostar poked his head through the elder’s den, a sunflower stem clamped between his teeth. “I thought you might like something pretty to decorate the den,” he mumbled, averting his gaze.

aesop (they/them) | galeclan Though they had been long retired, that did not mean that the elder wasn't acutely aware of what had been happening in and around GaleClan. If anything, spending all their time in camp meant their ears were more often on alert - plus the fact that their hearing had most certainly not faltered in the many seasons they'd been alive. They could hear what cats were talking about, they could hear the change in tone in cats' voices when they talked about going to certain borders or hunting in certain areas.
All of that being said - as perceptive as Aesop might have been, they had still never been a cat to stick their nose into something. There was a small part of them that had continuously felt like an outsider. The Clan cats had treated them so well, they had taken them in when they were at their lowest, they made a family here in this Clan, they had a kit and they had grandkits and they would even soon have great-grandkits. And yet, they still worried day in and day out that they did not belong. There was a fear deep down in Aesop that they never vocalized that the Clan would turn on them as the outsider, the one who had spent the first several seasons of their life moving from place to place, never finding a place they would call home.
Because of that, they tried not to partake in gossip. They didn't want to be seen as someone who made waves, lest cats decide that as an outsider, they no longer belonged. Maybe some of them would talk about the fact that Juniperfur was not biologically their kit, despite the fact that they equally raised her alongside Asterface and Rushstripe. Because of that, they feared that the Clan cats would decide there was no use in keeping Aesop around.
Even in their more elder moons, they feared that one day, perhaps GaleClan would decide that they were too much of a burden. All they did was take up space rather than contribute to Clan life. They tried their hardest to keep some sort of role they'd made themselves - the resident historian and storyteller. Perhaps they hadn't experienced the entirety of GaleClan's legacy, but they'd heard stories from their time as a warrior from cats who had been around since Galestar was leader. Cats who saw the births of the leader's kits, and had seen great wars and triumphs, and could pass on stories of the cats who came even before OrchidClan, ShoreClan and GaleClan. Aesop had learned of so many different cats over their lifetime, so they hoped that if they could at least contribute one thing to others around them, they could keep the stories alive. Not just the stories of the Clans, but the stories of the Tribes, the Colonies, of great heroes and monsters and ancestors and gods and artists and so many more.
That being said, they could - because of such worries and feelings of being an outsider - understand some of the fear that they sensed of the more newly named Wapatostar. They had admittedly begun to worry the less and less they heard the tom's voice over the past moon. Simultaneously, the voices of Frozengale and Sparrowclaw had grown, and the tone of their voices changed as the days went on. There was certainly grief within the camp, but there was also a great sense of fatigue of many.
Perhaps it would be time for Aesop to try and tell a story soon. They tried to scan through their mind, wondering if they should either find something that cats could relate to in this time that might give them hope, or if it would be better to find a story that was very different and could help distract them.
When the sound of the thicket around them moved, Aesop raised their head. They could just barely see the shape of a cat coming into the den, their large stature and scent immediately alerting them to Wapatostar. Their kaleidoscopic eyes twinkled in amusement, knowing that perhaps the gift of the sunflower would not provide much of an aesthetic change to Aesop's life, they could still appreciate the lovely fragrances of honey, vanilla and sweetness that enveloped the flower petals. They could still easily remember what a sunflower looked like, and its image burned bright in the elder's mind as they took in the lovely scent. "This is incredibly generous of you, Wapatostar, thank you," they said, their voice filled with genuine gratitude. Truly even the smallest gifts lifted their heart, and perhaps for just a moment helped ease some of the fears and anxieties that could never quite dissipate from the back of their mind.
The calico looked around their den, as though scanning for a spot to put the flower before thinking that they could ask one of the kits for their help of where might be the best spot. Still, with a gentle purr rumbling in their chest, Aesop turned their attention back to Wapatostar. "What do I owe this honour of having the leader visit an old elder like myself?" they asked, their voice still quite genuine in the question. It wasn't as though leaders never visited the elders den by any means, but it still felt like they should be dealing with bigger issues than sharing tongues with old cats.
