Burrowingowl! Fennecfox! Burrowingowl! Fennecfox!
The chants of ShoreClan pounded through the apprentice's ears. She had hoped that today would be her day, and when she watched her adoptive siblings get called forward, her heart pounded with excitement. But her name wasn't called. She was twelve moons old, she'd be training hard for the last six moons, and yet she was still stuck as a -paw.
She'd figured that most of the Clan hated her by this point. But this felt some cruel and unusual punishment to hold her back from receiving her warrior name. Why did it seem as though they were all out to get her? Why was this their punishment of choice? If Bluepaw was such a burden on ShoreClan, she figured it would be easier to just kick her out at this point. That way any lingering curses would follow her out and leave ShoreClan behind.
As the warrior ceremony had been wrapping up and everyone crowded the newly named warriors of ShoreClan, Bluepaw had snuck away in the commotion. As far as she could tell, no one noticed, and no one followed. Not that she expected anyone to notice or follow her anyways. There was a sting when she realized that not even her own mentor, Maggotcheer, had noticed or followed her out. For moons now, she thought that at least Maggotcheer would be the one to pay attention to where she was.
Bluepaw wasn't entirely sure how she felt about Maggotcheer most days, unsure about the way she went about things. But she did something that no one else seemed to do: she noticed Bluepaw, and acknowledged how hurt she clearly was. She seemed to see a place for Bluepaw in the Clan when it felt like everyone else thought that maybe it would have been better for there to be no place for her at all.
The apprentice hadn't been paying much attention to where she was going, not realizing where her paws were taking her. She didn't even notice the upcoming border somehow.
She was too busy wondering what her warrior name would be if she ever got one. She wondered if her father would approach Minkstar and demand that her original prefix be reinstated. Maybe her name would be Deathcrow. A prefix for a cat whose birth brought about great death, and a suffix reminding other cats of the terrible omens that followed her. Together, perhaps something even worse, so that no cat would ever forget that the omens could spell out death.
Yet, the only names that echoed in her mind were Burrowingowl and Fennecfox.
