kotik (he/him) | loner Kotik still had yet to properly learn where each of the Clans' territories laid. Apparently, as much as he'd learned, there were three different Clans, though the names weren't quite sticking. It didn't help that he was trying to learn how all these cats conversed anyways, using an entirely different vocabulary and way of speaking in comparison to how he used to converse back home.
The one Koisplash belonged to was... SplashClan? No, ShoreClan. All he could remember was that they were near the water and they liked to swim. Just the image in his head of the she-cat taking the water was amusing to him. He'd never heard of cats who enjoyed swimming before. Of course, he knew lots of cats who loved fish - he always loved to spend time around the lyudi who would throw their string on a stick into the water until fish emerged. He could remember the way they purred in amusement when he and his sister would pounce on a floundering fish as it was pulled from the water and onto land.
Then there was GillClan? No, HillClan - that made more sense, yes? They were the ones out on the open land who ran after rabbits. But Kotik could have sworn the name started with a harder sound. Ah well, he knew that he had yet to meet anyone from that Clan. And the last one... oh goodness, what was the name?
Kotik wracked his brain, frustrated that it wouldn't come to him. He tried to give himself a bit of a break, though, knowing that he was already learning so much. Besides, it wasn't as if there was some sort of test, or truly any reason to get upset. He knew that if he asked Koisplash again the names of the Clans, she would give him that sweet look and remind him again. But there was a strange part of him that almost wanted to impress her.
Today was a new day, though! He wanted to explore new places, and was enjoying moving through a slightly more forested area. The large tom has passed by a river earlier, and wondered if SplashClan cats liked to swim here, too.
But what really took Kotik's attention was some large, strange looking trees nearer to the water. He was absolutely mesmerized looking at the long, hanging leaves as they seemed to flow towards the ground. From far away, it looked as though it had been leaves as long as several cats, but upon closer inspection, it almost seemed as though there were lots of leaves hanging off of branches almost like feathers. The branches were not as solid as most trees he'd seen before, seeming as though they would sway in the lightest wind. Kotik wondered just how beautiful that would look, and told himself he would have to come here on a windy day. How he'd love to watch the branches dance in the wind, and imagine the music that the world would make around him. riley ● my attempt at describing a willow tree ● 501 words

He wasn't on patrol. Cricketblaze had left camp before patrols had even been assigned specifically to AVOID being put on patrol. He could just turn around right now and pretend he never saw the cat staring at the willow trees like he'd never seen one before. After all just because fighting the only thing he was good at didn't mean he had to go looking for a fight. But Cricketblaze had to admit, if only to himself, he was... curious. Because the stranger really WAS looking at the willow trees like he'd never seen one before. And to Cricketblaze, who had been seeing these trees ever since he turned six moons old and was allowed out of camp, it was odd. Odd enough Cricketblaze was hesitant to attack. And you know what they say about cats and curiosity. Luckily for him, Cricketblaze did not know the saying about cats and curiosity! So he moved until he was upwind of the stranger, allowing his scent to blow down to him, and approached with pawsteps loud enough to wake the dead. "Hello there!" he mewed, still some tail-lengths away. "I'm Cricketblaze. You're standing on OrchidClan territory and staring at OrchidClan trees. I'd like to know WHY you're standing on OrchidClan territory and staring at OrchidClan trees."xvinn

kotik (he/him) | loner While the cat had certainly done everything he could to avoid startling Kotik, he couldn't help but give the slightest bit of a jump after being pulled out from his little daydream. Thankfully, a slight shake of his body was more than enough to push the feeling away as he watched the dusty-coloured cat, attempting to parse his words. This new language was always a bit fast for him, and it took a little bit of work to figure it out, but Kotik was slowly getting a better hang of it with every interaction.
At first, he purred in amusement at himself. OrchidClan was the name of the other Clan he was thinking of. He knew there was a third, but the name had simply escaped him. Though, the idea of trees belonging to a specific Clan certainly seemed odd to him. Instead, Kotik looked back at the gorgeous tree and purred even louder.
"OrchidClan trees?" Kotik said inquisitively, the strange tone of his voice becoming clear with even his first two works. He spoke in a different intonation, his words somewhat more melodic and rhythmic. Even the r sounds in his words sounded almost rolled, and it almost sounded as though he was using sounds that the tom in front of him had likely never heard before. Some of his sounds were gruff, but there was a light airyness to them, adding an extra syllable to each word as he spoke. "How do trees belong to cats? Surely, they belong to themselves, no?" he purred.
Kotik didn't bother answering the why, whether it was because he didn't feel he needed a reason or because he didn't quite hear the other cat. But he sat still, very peacefully, looking up towards the dancing leaves. He closed his eyes and took in the scent of the trees around him, the scent of the water mixing in with it. The idea of territory was, in fact, still incredibly foreign to the ironically foreign cat. He couldn't understand the idea of land belonging to specific cats, when the world was more than large enough for them all to share, was it not? There was more than enough prey for all to be fed, right? Of course, Kotik had yet to meet all the cats in the area - for all he knew there were more here than he'd ever met in his life in his old home, but that wouldn't sway his position that the ideas of territories seemed odd.
He turned back again after a slow, thoughtful breath. "Cricketblaze, you say?" he asked, a light tilt to his head in curiosity. "Interesting..." he purred in response, always eager to repeat the very first word he'd learned in this new language. It certainly wasn't incorrect of a usage either, he did find the names of cats to be incredibly fascinating. The idea that cats had one name that everyone called them, regardless of relationship, was odd to him. He'd begun to adopt a name for himself for these cats who seemed to want just one way to refer to him, but it felt oddly formal and he wasn't quite used to it yet. Perhaps it was because he wanted to call other cats different names as he got to know them, rather than sticking with the same name, and he'd hoped to receive the same in kind. Receiving a new name as a marker of a new aspect of a relationship was often such a moment of great privielege, and Kotik knew it was a thing he would soon enough miss. Yet, simultaneously, he knew that he would be forced to leave some things behind.
Ah, well, it seemed all those thoughts went away when he turned back to the pretty trees in front of him again and admired them. If he had to trade some of his practices and customs in order to enjoy beautiful views he would have never seen before, perhaps he would survive with that.

Cricketblaze felt his ears turn warm in response to the stranger's surprised flinch. He dismissed the warmth with a flick of his ears before turning them in the other's direction. His own surprise at the accent coating the other's voice showed in a blink of his eyes, but hopefully he was too far away for the other to discern it. He tilted his head in thoughtful curiosity at the loner's observation about trees owning themselves. "If the tree was outside of our borders, I would agree about it owning itself. But since it IS in our borders, it gets our scent markers, so it belongs to us." Cricketblaze narrowed his eyes at the other until he was squinting. "... And since it does belong to us, I'm technically supposed to be chasing you off. But that's too much work!"Tail kinked high over his back, Cricketblaze approached with a smile. "What's your name? Or what can I call you?"xvinn

kotik (he/him) | loner The loner blinked at the light brown tom, still quite confused on his insistence that a group of cats owned such a beautiful piece of nature. To him, it seemed cruel to stop other cats from seeing such a sight simply because it belonged to them. The idea that he would supposedly chase the loner off for just sitting here and admiring something beautiful created by the earth was so incredibly peculiar and alien to him.
Of course, he wasn't questioning whether or not Cricketblaze and the rest of OrchidClan made their home nearby, but he had a hard time wrapping his mind around the idea that it meant they owned the land. Chasing cats off for being somewhere was, in the loner's mind, the acts of lyudi - or "twolegs" as he'd been made aware the cats here called them. Lyudi would get upset at cats being too close to their sleeping quarters and chase them away, and to him, that was one of the things that helped separate cats and lyudi. It was their ability to share the land, to share resources and help one another out without the need for these arbitrary borders. Lyudi often marked their borders quite aggressively with wooden fences, perfectly straight bushes or stone walls. But what marked the borders for these cats, other than perhaps the fact that the scents seemed to alter slightly wherever the white and tabby tom went? That being said, he had a rather difficult time being able to tell them apart as he moved around until he was well within these supposed borders.
But what he found even more pointless than borders was arguing. He wasn't going to sit here and argue with Cricketblaze about how cats couldn't own land or trees or rivers or flowers. Instead, he couldn't help but give an amused purr fringing on laughter at his supposed "laziness" of chasing him off.
His ears twitched, almost uncomfortably for a second being asked what he should be called. How he wished he could just say "Call me whatever you feel fits best!" but he'd learned quickly that it wasn't how things worked around here. He missed being given names by the cats around him - maybe one day he could eventually help them learn such a fun tradition. Even if he couldn't implement it in a way where the cats around here would change their naming traditions altogether, especially as it seemed they had a rather strange but long and storied way of naming themselves, but maybe he could start introducing them to naming himself. He wondered what cats would call him following their own naming conventions.
But still, he tried his best. "Well, my mother once called me Kotik, but my sister calls me Bratr. I had friends calling me Misiu or Swonko, but there was also cat who lived near stone cross den calling me Głupek..." the tom's voice trailed off near the end, his distaste for the final cat rather clear. But quickly enough, his shook his tail and let it roll off his back, knowing that Khuylo was far away from him now.
He looked at the Clan cat in front of him though and wondered if he wouldn't end up confusing him with all of this. With a simple slow blink, he laughed it off. "But those who did not know me also call me Kotik, if that is easier."

The other cat was visibly confused. Cricketblaze blinked back, confused by his confusion. What part of what Cricketblaze said was confusing? It seemed pretty simple to him. This was OrchidClan territory, he was trespassing, and Cricketblaze was too lazy to chase him off. Seemed pretty simple to him!
He was a few feathers short of a full wing, wasn’t he? But he seemed friendly enough! So Cricketblaze would return the sentiment.
The increasingly long list of names given both baffled and distressed him. Cricketblaze couldn't imaging having so many different names. At least he just has Cricketkit and Cricketpaw. Cricket would always be a part of him, even as a cranky old elder. But none of the names even sounded remotely alike.
Finally the stranger landed on Kotik, and Cricketblaze was rather relieved. Of the entire list, Kotik was easiest for him. "Nice to meet you! I'm Cricketblaze! So. What ARE you doing on our territory!"

kotik (he/him) | loner The white tom stood on his feet for a moment, stretching his paws far in front of him before letting the stretch roll along his spine and into his back paws behind him. He still couldn't quite understand this idea that Cricketblaze was talking about - the idea that territory belonged to one or many cats. Despite how simple it seemed to this new friend, the sheer idea of borders was something that was entirely new to Kotik.
He didn't understand how anyone could own truly anything. Should the world itself not be shared? After all, from what Kotik had learned from other cats he'd met in this area, it was clear that cats did share quite a bit. But what made one Clan different from another? Why did they decide on these arbitrary invisible borders that they just weren't allowed to cross? Was there a border on all sides - what if a cat decided to wander in a direction away from the other Clans, was there a point where they suddenly couldn't keep going before they were out of territory?
Reality was, he wasn't entirely sure he wanted to acknowledge the idea that he was on someone's territory. As kind as Cricketblaze was being, and as kind as Koisplash had also been to him, the land would always be here. One day Cricketblaze and Koisplash and Kotik and every other cat here would be gone, and their descendants would also be gone, and perhaps the Clans would no longer live here at all. Certainly it wasn't as though they'd been here since the beginning of time. And then what would happen to the land? It would still exist, and no one would own it. So, in Kotik's mind, it meant that no one owned it now, either. It was just land. The other animals most certainly didn't pay attention to these borders, did they? Kotik assumed that if one was chasing a bird or a rabbit, then they would just keep running or flying past these borders. Would cats just stop giving chase and let their prey go? How odd.
Kotik turned his gaze back towards the strange tree in front of him. "There are no trees like these where I am from," Kotik said wistfully. He cocked his head as he paid attention to the leaves, wishing there was more of a breeze so he could see the way they might dance in the wind. Oh, how beautiful they must look as they fell towards the ground, he thought. The world made such beautiful music, he would love to hear the symphony that this new land might make. He wondered if it ever snowed here, and how it would feel under his paws compared to the snow back home. "Do you have name for trees like this?" He added with a swift charm and excitement. He had never bothered asking much about the names of nature around him, but wondered what they must sound like. "Do you name the trees? You are Cricketblaze, I am Kotik. What is tree named?" riley ● i think this was about a willow tree if that helps lmao ● 514 words
