sparrowclaw (he/him) | galeclan A groan involuntarily emerged from the tom as he stretched. It was a sound that had always often escaped him, which he'd never been so grateful for until now. Nothing made his fur crawl along his spine more than the idea that someone might take his groans for what they truly were: an annoyance of a stiff leg. Sparrowclaw knew he was too young to retire, and he would much rather be dead than stuck in the elder's den, listening to his Clanmates complain about apprentices and their nests not being perfect.
The tabby found himself restless. His paws were itching to do something, which he was more than happy to perhaps put into some simple hunting. It was always the chance for him to get some quiet alone time without feeling like he was being useless. No one would be around like an earworm asking how he was doing or if he needed a rest as though he were three times his age. He may not have been the youngest warrior by any means, but this would only be his third leaf-bare.
How he hated leaf-bare...
This time when a groan escaped him, it was entirely by his own doing. He tried not to dwell on the past too much, and refused to let any of it bother him. He had moved on. He had perhaps realized that Frozenkingdom, too, had moved on. The tom was now busying himself in the medicine cat's den, seemingly content with the world he'd created for himself without Tangledvine. Sparrowclaw had some appreciation for someone who wasn't mopning around and moving on. The days were still coming, and curling up in a ball and crying every day would do no one any good for the impending future.
"Wapatofur," Sparrowclaw barked out as he moved towards the entrance of the camp. "What are you doing right now?" he asked, his voice as flat as ever. While he'd certainly learned after mentoring Rabbitchirp that perhaps he could come off a little bit cold, Sparrowclaw had no real intent on changing how he acted around others. It meant they left him alone more often than not, but this was a partciular bone he needed to pick.
When Wapatofur had originally joined GaleClan, Sparrowclaw paid the tom no mind. He saw no point in bothering himself with some outsider, though he also didn't care where cats came from so long as they intended to do their part. From the little he'd seen, it seemed that at least that was the cat's intent. But when Basilstar seemed to think that Wapatofur was the most suited for deputyship, Sparrowclaw couldn't help but find himself even the most slightly bothered. He wouldn't pretend that he hadn't seen the leader gazing over at ShoreClan with a strange look, so it seemed perhaps unsurprising that he would choose a ShoreClan-born cat as his deputy.
But, just with everything else that had happened, there was no point in dwelling. All that mattered was now, and what mattered to Sparrowclaw was making sure that Wapatofur was at least somewhat qualified to one day lead this Clan, should StarClan feel that would be his future. He didn't want to spend his life catering to a lazy leader who couldn't hold his own and would need to be surrounded by others to do his bidding and protection.
Sparrowclaw's amber eyes bore into the deputy, sharp as ever. He hoped it was clear that he would not take no for an answer.

WAPATOFUR/GALECLAN DEPUTYTAGS TAGS TAGS
- I'll be the match to your candle, darling -
Leafbare had recently arrived in GaleClan, yet Wapatofur’s heart had never felt warmer.
The large brown and white tom emerged from the warriors den, the ghost a smile replacing his usual pained expression. His green eyes, often tired and errant, glowed with a tranquility only the presence of a beautiful she-cat could evoke from him. The recipient of his affections, the lovely Cora, likely awaited his arrival that very moment, her small frame easily hidden behind the tall grass that obscured their meeting spot.
The deputy’s paws itched to break into a gallop, but he restrained himself, his eyes flitting nervously between clanmates as he, step by step, neared the camp entrance. ‘The less attention you receive, the better,’ he told himself. ‘Just act normal. You already finished assigning all the patrols. No one has any reason to be concerned by your absence. Just breathe.’
If Wapatofur had been just a regular warrior, he might not have had to fret as much about attracting attention. After all, despite his impressive size, his disappearing act – perfected by moons of social anxiety and nosy family members – was rivaled by few. Deputyship had complicated matters, as cats who otherwise would have overlooked the tom turned to him for everything now, from orders to friendly conversation. (The latter scared him more.) The job did have some perks, though. For instance, he could set his own schedule, freeing him to see Cora practically whenever he wished – after he had completed his duties, of course. He would always earn his keep, no matter what, no matter if he and Cora became more than friends...
“Wapatofur, what are you doing now?” The other feline’s voice cut through his internal monologue like a battle-sharp claw. Jumping slightly, the Norwegian Forest Cat halted just before the entrance and whipped his head toward the speaker. He could feel his paws beginning to sweat.
Uh oh, it was Sparrowclaw. Wapatofur failed to hide his grimace. Although the two had seldom interacted, the cripled warrior had a reputation for being… a little intense, and Wapatofur liked to avoid intense cats, especially when he had places to be. Conversations with folks like Sparrowclaw seldom ended quickly. So far, Sparrowclaw hadn’t given him any trouble. But what did he want now? The deputy felt his blood run cold. What if the warrior knew where Wapatofur was headed?
“I, um, I’m just going to hunt,” he croaked, fur on fire. “I’m after a juicy rabbit actually!” Everyone knew he loved rabbits and solitude. They were practically the only two things most GaleClanners knew about him, other than his ShoreClan heritage. His lie was highly plausible.
Now, how to extricate himself from the situation? Right. Platitudes.
“Please forgive me, but I am very hungry and will need to be going now, Sparrowclaw.” His words were awkward and clunky, but he pushed through. “Good day.”

sparrowclaw (he/him) | galeclan Sparrowclaw suppressed a growl. Instead, he looked skyward and studied the sky momentarily, searching for the position of the sun in the sky. His tail flicked with moderate annoyance. Squinting his eyes, he turned back to Wapatofur. "I'd call you a rabbit-brained fool, but at least rabbits know when they are and are not active," he pointed out, directing the deputy's attention towards the time of day. Rabbits were crepuscular creatures, meaning that like most cats - at least, those who did not have Clan duties - they were often only active when the sun was rising and setting. At this point in the day, any rabbits out on the moor would have gone back into their warrens until the sun was beginning to set once again in order to sleep. So, unless Wapatofur intended on diving into the tunnels himself, Sparrowclaw could tell he was trying to get out of their conversation.
Besides, as much as any GaleClan loved a good rabbit, Sparrowclaw felt a pang of annoyance at the idea that Wapatofur thought he would catch a single rabbit and eat the entire thing himself. No matter how hungry and how large the tom was, a rabbit could often easily feed three cats, and with leaf-bare around the corner, no cat should be hoarding food in such a way. Perhaps he had intended on catching it and bringing it back, but knowing that Wapatofur - much like Sparrowclaw - loved to be alone, he would probably prefer to eat on his own, too.
"I need a sparring partner," the smaller tom stated, his tone clear that he meant for Wapatofur to be his subject.
Reality was, that as much as Wapatofur had been with GaleClan for a decent amount of time, Sparrowclaw had never had the chance to practice with him. He was often hard to pin down, both literally and figuratively. While some might have found it suspicious, Sparrowclaw thought no more of it, knowing that the tom still brought back prey and still attended to his duties to GaleClan. But now that Wapatofur had been made deputy, to the light annoyance of Sparrowclaw who'd been vying for the position for most of his life, he refused to let the tomcat slip past him any more.
His amber eyes scanned over towards the prey-kill heap, which seemed at least decently full. He motioned over towards it. "Elders and kits have already been fed. Grab yourself a lapwing and meet me at the entrance when you're done."
Before Wapatofur could give him any further excuse, Sparrowclaw turned his back and made his way over towards the camp entrance. It might have been somewhat underhanded for him to more or less corner the deputy into training with him, and to set himself up in a location where he could not leave the camp without passing him, but he certainly had his reasons for doing what he did. haze ● pat pat IN ● 496 words

WAPATOFUR/GALECLAN DEPUTY - Start small, grow tall -
Wapatofur's face burned. How could he be so mouse-brained – or rabbit-brained as Sparrowclaw aptly put it – to forget the sleep schedule of his favorite food? That stupid mistake was embarrassing, even for him.
‘This is what I get for not coming up with a proper cover story before I ran into someone,’ he thought with a grimace. ‘I’m not as invisible as I used to be.’ Wapatofur felt especially conspicuous to cranky toms these days. Seldom a morning passed where Frozenkingdom wasn’t irritated with him for some reason. Not that he blamed the cantankerous medicine cat. Anyone could see Wapatofur wasn’t deputy material. It was only a matter of time before Basilstar demoted him. Boy did he yearn for that day.
Before Wapatofur could respond to Sparrowclaw with another excuse, the older tom cut him off with an explanation of his own.
“A sparring partner?” Wapatofur choked out. That’s what Sparrowclaw wanted? He gaped at his clanmate as if Sparrowclaw had fungus growing out of both ears. It was certainly better than the feared alternative – that his friendship with Cora had been discovered – but even so, play fighting held little to no appeal to him. Especially not with Sparrowclaw, who Wapatofur was starting to think might be a little… unhinged. Besides, he didn’t want to leave Cora waiting.Their moments together were far too few as it was.
“Grab yourself a lapwing and meet me at the entrance when you’re done.” If Wapatofur had any semblance of a backbone, he might have reprimanded Sparrowclaw for giving orders to a deputy. Instead, he watched in stunned silence as the audacious warrior stalked away from him. ‘Foxdung.’ What had he gotten himself into? Perhaps he could find another way out of camp and avoid Sparrowclaw completely? No, if I know anything about him, he’d almost certainly try to track me down even if I managed to escape. I can’t endanger Cora like that. I’ll have to come up with some other excuse as to why today is not a good day for sparring.
But first, he really did need food. He couldn’t confront someone on an empty stomach. Wapatofur wolfed down the first item he could find on the freshkill pile – a spindly mouse – before pushing through the thicket that shielded the camp from view.
“Sparrowclaw? Can we, um, perhaps reschedule this, uh, training session for a different day? I-I slept fitfully last night and I need to take it easy. And there’s also my paw! It’s healing from infection. You can, um, ask Frozenkingdom all about it.”

sparrowclaw (he/him) | galeclan The tabby watched as Wapatofur got something to eat and got to his paws, giving himself a full body stretch - giving his front legs a long stretch before he rolled through his spine to extend his back legs behind him. Still, he gave an involuntary irritated flick of his ear as he watched the way Wapatofur seemed to eat, as though he were thinking too much about something. Surely he wasn't thinking about what was best on the fresh-kill pile, could he? No. He seemed to swallow down his mouse before approaching.
As Wapatofur seemed to stack excuse upon excuse, a growl rumbled in Sparrowclaw's throat. He'd already been rather irritated that the young tom was chosen as deputy in the first place, but hoped at the very least that he would at least have a spine to hold himself up. An awful feeling crawled under his skin, wondering if GaleClan was truly being led by a bunch of weaklings. Between Wapatofur and Basilstar, a sickly feeling rolled in his stomach, wondering what either young tom would do in the face of another Clan attacking. And if they were too afraid - or as it seemed - to spar with their Clanmates, then what was the point of it all?
At the mention of Frozenkingdom, Sparrowclaw practically rolled his eyes. The medicine cat certainly couldn't scare him - it wasn't as though the two toms weren't often at one another's throats for some reason or another. While he would be hard pressed to say he "cared" for his late sister's mate, the fights were never out of any true semblance of dislike or hatred. In fact, their fights were quite the opposite, if anything.
And so would this one, most likely.
His tail began to kick up dust as he sat in front of Wapatofur. What Sparrowclaw lacked in stature, he certainly was able to meet in attitude. Perhaps a kinder cat would give the deputy the benefit of the doubt and let him "rest", but the warrior wasn't idiotic. "You seemed perfectly fine just moments ago when you planned to hunt," he pointed out, his ear twitching. There was almost a cynical way that he spoke, a pride in knowing he'd caught Wapatofur in a trap where he had no where to escape. He'd be lying if he pretended that the strange itching way that Wapatofur moved didn't almost make him chuckle. It was a pride in knowing that even with his size, he could still make a much larger cat squirm.
While Sparrowclaw didn't speak anymore, he let his body language speak for him. If Wapatofur was hiding something, he ought to either come out with it, or simply give in and let the warrior test his skill as a fighter. Truth of the matter was, Sparrowclaw was not a gossip - he couldn't care less what the deputy had going on so long as it did not interfere with his ability to serve GaleClan in the end. He didn't care for the truth of what he seemed to be itching at, he cared about sparring.

- Start small, grow tall -
Wapatofur could feel panic beginning to form in his chest. Somehow Sparrowclaw had hurtled every excuse the deputy offered. Most cats wouldn't have dared talk back to a deputy, yet the smaller tom had done it not once but multiple times in the span of a few minutes. Surely Sparrowclaw's continued insubordination warranted some kind of reprimand in the future? The thought briefly entered Wapatofur's mind, but he dismissed almost as quickly as it came. Something told him such a threat would only make Sparrowclaw angrier and, perhaps worst of all, more resolute. Wapatofur couldn't imagine a worse enemy to have in the clan than this spitfire. Well, maybe Frozengale, but even then, the medicine cat had never demanded to fight him... at least not yet.
The large brown-and-white tom sighed. It seemed he wouldn't be getting out of this... whatever this was. Without uttering another word, Wapatofur flicked his tail, signaling for Sparrowclaw to lead the way, his ears twitching ever so slightly in irritation. Of all days to challenge him to a duel, the smaller tom had chosen the worst one. Would Cora think he'd stood her up? Would she think he no longer wanted to be her friend? Would she be upset that he'd wasted her time? Would she leave and never come back? These thoughts swirled inside his mind, darkening his mood.
"Where are we headed?" He mewed, an edge to his voice. He was ready to be done with whatever grandiose sparring session Sparrowclaw had planned. 'Just let him beat you and you're free to spend time with Cora.' Wapatofur figured a quick victory would satisfy the proud tom, maybe even make him feel better about not being picked as deputy himself. Wapatofur might not be the smartest cat in the clan, but even he recognized Sparrowclaw's desire to lead the clan one day. He could almost smell the frustration emanating off the much smaller cat.

sparrowclaw (he/him) | galeclan Wapatofur sighed and flicked his tail to give Sparrowclaw the lead. The tom did not nod or show any sign of satisfaction in "winning" this argument. He had not expected any different, so it felt more that this was just the outcome that was going to happen no matter what. In the same vein, he did not show any gratification in the deputy's annoyed or irritated mannerisms in losing. He would get over it, Sparrowclaw figured.
Fact of the matter was, Sparrowclaw held no resentment towards Wapatofur when it came to the position of deputy. Yes, it was true that the tom had felt some frustration over a position he had desperately wanted, but that had nothing to do with Wapatofur himself. It had been Basilstar who had overlooked Sparrowclaw as what he felt was the obvious choice for second-in-command and a cat who would one day become a great leader himself. But of course, it had been perfect timing for him to get injured just in time for Basilstar to name his deputy, Wapatofur.
So, at the very least, he could take the time to understand what it was that Basilstar saw in Wapatofur. Clearly if he saw him as the correct choice, he must have some great strengths that Sparrowclaw hadn't learned about just yet. He certainly wasn't against the idea that he could be a great choice, he simply had not seen it yet. On top of that, there was forever one thing that mattered to Sparrowclaw more than anything else: loyalty. He wanted to make sure that when push came to shove, Wapatofur would not back down and would defend GaleClan with everything he had. In the end, it also would not change how Sparrowclaw viewed the deputy position - he would also make sure that he would protect his deputy should it turn out that perhaps he was a pathetic wimp who couldn't hold his own.
"Where are we headed?"
Sparrowclaw's tail twitched behind him. "Where we train apprentices to train, naturally," he responded, not adding anything more. There was a slight tick in his voice, as though insinuating that Wapatofur should know where that was and shouldn't have to ask. Of course, he hoped that the direction he took as they left the thicket surrounding camp made things more obvious, but there was one place in particular where Sparrowclaw always liked to spar. On top of being prime for fighting practice; given that it was also where they often trained apprentices, it meant that cats could watch if they wanted to learn. It also meant that Sparrowclaw was often around the area in order to give tips to any cats who he saw practicing.
The walk was rather quiet. Admittedly, Sparrowclaw was not much of a conversationalist regardless. He didn't have anything to say - not because he was angry or anything, he just didn't feel he had anything that was important to bring up. His plans had already been laid out. He wanted to spar, and he wanted to spar with his new deputy. He wanted to see the way he moved and fought so that he could learn more for himself, and learn how best to fight side by side with Wapatofur should they need to do exactly that. His plans were rarely no more than self-serving. He wanted to better himself, but he also wanted to make sure he knew what to do in a life or death situation to see how he could support the large brown and white tom.
Soon enough, they arrived along the green plains - a nice, open and flat spot perfect for training. Sparrowclaw walked a few paces forward, shook out his fur a bit before turning around and sitting, staring at Wapatofur. His judgement on the tom's battle tactics began immediately, watching to see how he might approach this situation. Would he realize that Sparrowclaw sat in waiting, or would he perhaps try and wait him out in turn? Would he be nervous to spar, or would he go full throttle without hesitation? All the smaller tom could do was sit, watch and wait quietly. He would not verbally give any sort of indication. Ideally, Wapatofur was smart enough to realize what he was waiting for.
