kotik (he/him) | loner
Kotik was mesmerized.
He had seen far more than the average cat, but he had never seen an expanse of water quite this large before. He found himself absolutely captivated, yellow eyes locked on the horizon in the far distance. He had never before seen a horizon so smooth and flat, the world as he knew it seeming so endless. Every horizon he had been met with in his lifetime had been jagged, sharp with stone dens that stuck out every which way. Then, when he escaped from his own lyudi, still the horizon seemed lined with the tops of trees. But from here, the horizon was simply this long line where the water met the sky, continuing on infinitely as far as Kotik was aware.
It had only been a quarter moon since his escape. While he had caught the scent of many cats around here, he had yet to run into any. It seemed so foreign and strange to him. He'd come from a world where cats were always so welcoming and supportive of one another, and it was hard to go anywhere without running into another feline who wasn't so incredibly curious and kind. It was a world where all helped one another and did not hide in the shadows.
There had been a few moments where Kotik had felt as though there were eyes trained on him, watching his every movement as though he would place one paw in the wrong place and get his fur torn off for it. He'd never felt such hostility, and it brought a sense of fear along his spine.
Now, though, in this moment, as he stared across the horizon, all that fear seemed to melt away into the earth and rocks below him. He felt as peace as he watched the way the water moved, the way the sounds crashed with each other. It was beautiful in a way he'd never experienced before. He'd never seen water in such a way that gave him pause. Back home, water always was formed between smooth stone, rushing in one particular direction. Sometimes he would sit near the smooth stone rivers and watch the water and the fish, and wonder where it was that the water went to. Was this where it went? If he had followed the rivers, would they have led them here? Did that mean that perhaps, if he followed against the flow of the rivers, that one day he might find home?
As much as he wished it could be true, he knew that it was unlikely. He did not know where his home was anymore. All he could say was that his home was near his sister, though he wished often that she would have left the den to be with him. If she had, then home would have been everywhere. Perhaps they could have followed the rivers away and seen where it took them and if it would lead them to a more familiar location. But if his sister insisted on staying put, then that meant that Kotik would not be able to travel far. He could not imagine leaving behind his sister just to follow adventure.
But it was nice to have a sense of calm long enough, here before the water, to think about the possibility. The sight certainly made him realize just how large the world was. Home would have to be somewhere new that he would make. Perhaps it could be somewhere that he could wake up every day to this sight.
